Frosting Cupcakes Tips

Frosting cupcakes is just about my favorite part of cupcakes altogether. Who didn't just lick the frosting off as a kid? Hello me. ANYWAYS. There are many tips to frost the perfect cupcake so let's dive right into them.

First off, you must decide how you are going to frost your cupcake. By knife, piping bag or with your hands (this way gets a little messy). As I have grown as a baker, I always use Wilton Pastry Bags. I use different sizes just depending on how many cupcakes I am frosting, and how much frosting I made. I am just going to say, the bigger the better. If you fill a small one too full, frosting will explode out the top, and there will be a HUGE mess.

Secondly, you must have the right tips for the bags if you decide to use them. There are many tips for many different things that you want to do with decorating. Here is my little reference in a picture that I use A LOT. It shows you the many different tips and what the frosting will look like when you use them.
Take these into account and never forget them! They will be your go to when you are frosting cupcakes! My favorite tip is the Wilton 1M or the Wilton 2D. They are the prettiest and easiest to frost if you don't have a steadier hand.

These ones are great for smoother frosting, and are great for piping writing if you need to write on top of your cupcakes.

Thirdly, get a cap for the tip. I used to just stick the tip into the bag and go from there, but if you don't want a complete mess then get a cap. I am not saying that you need one, but they help for sure.

Finally, frosting the cupcake! To frost a cupcake, point the tip of the pastry bag on an outer edge of the cupcake an apply pressure to the frosting in the bag with one hand while holding the top of the bag to keep it shut. Move in a circular motion as you are frosting the cupcake, moving from the outer edges to the middle. Usually when I reach the center of the cupcake I bring it up to a point, and this makes the cupcake look more put together especially if you are putting something in the middle of the cupcake.

That is all! Super easy and simple, but a little harder than you think it is. I love piping bags and highly recommend them if you haven't already gotten them. Here is the link to the Wilton website if you want to order them. They are also at Walmart, I think, in the smaller versions if you just want to trial them.
