Solving Cupcake Problems

We all got problems, especially when it comes to baking cupcakes. Man are there a lot of problems that can occur with cupcakes. I am going to talk about some problems that can occur with them and how to solve all of these problems.

1. Sinking Cupcakes. First off, absolutely everyone hate when you get the cupcakes out of the oven and they just sink right through the middle. Every baker is looking at them going what the heck did I possibly do wrong. WELL, most likely you mixed the batter way too much and this is what caused your cupcakes to become so short and dense. It can be very easy to over mix your batter, everyone does it, even some of the best bakers in the world probably still to it to this day. How do you fix it? Well once it is done, you can't un-cook the cupcakes, BUT you can try again. When you try again, try just mixing each individual ingredient just to the point where it looks mixed. I feel that this is very easy to do with a Kitchen Aid mixer as well because you can just leave it going and walk away. When you walk away just simply turn the mixer down or off if you can.

2. Dry Cupcakes. This can happen A LOT when making cupcakes. Why would this happen exactly? Well, think back to when you were mixing the cupcake batter. Did you accidentally put two cups of flour instead of just one? Or did you accidentally put too much cocoa or baking powder in? Hmmm. Well if you answered yes to at least one of these questions then there you have it! Yes, your sad cupcakes are dry and sadly bad now. What do you do when you try again? Make sure to count the cups out loud or write them down as you put them in the batter. I find it easier this way because then I remember what I put in the batter better. Also a reason why they may be dry is that you cooked them too long so almost always take them out earlier than the recipe says or watch them in the oven as they cook if you are experimenting with a new recipe.

3. Sticky Cupcakes. Man is this the worst of the worst, especially if you need the cupcakes right away. Never ever put your cupcakes in an air tight container after you bake them. Containers are your worst enemies when cooling cupcakes. For your cupcakes to not be sticky, get a drying rack and keep the cupcakes on them for at least a couple of hours. I always put them on there overnight before frosting so that the frosting doesn't ever tear the top of the cupcake off.

4. Sinking to the Bottom. I feel like this one is always a no brainer, but if you aren't a normal baker than it really isn't. Have you ever added something to a batter, for example, chocolate chips. And have them just sink to the bottom when you cook them? Yeah. It happens a lot. Try rolling the chocolate chips in flour. This helps with giving them a little bit of weight so that they don't sink to the bottom. I personally don't like to bake with things in my cupcakes just because of this reason. I am always scared that they are going to sink anyways and that the bottom is going to burn.

5. Overflowing Cupcakes. This one is always a doozy. I feel like it is super hard to always get the right amount of batter into the little liners. This always varies on every single batter, but always try to either fill the liners half way or three quarters of the way full. Like I said depending on the batter. If the batter is more runny you can always fill them a little fuller than usual. If the batter is a little more thicker than usual then you shouldn't fill them as full because all they are going to do is rise like crazy if you fill those full with thick batter.

6. Cupcake Liners. I feel like everyone always has this issue. The cupcake liner either peels off too easily while the cupcakes are just sitting or the it is on the other side where the liner doesn't peel off at all. This lands with your sticky cupcakes or your dry cupcakes. Either your cupcakes are way to dry or way to sticky. If they are way to dry make sure that you don;t keep them in the oven too long, if they are way to sticky just make sure to keep them out of containers for a long period of time.

7. Flat Cupcakes. Well the more question is why aren't my cupcakes flat? You want them flat so that you can put on your yummy frosting and your pretty decorations and garnishes. I love to garnish and decorate just as much as you so how do we get them flat? Well, a lot of this has to deal with oven temperature and different types of ovens can do this too. Yes, you may have to get a different oven if you are serious with baking.

8. Sloppy Frosting. This one is pretty typical. It is a pretty obvious answer too. This means that you didn't let your cupcakes cool enough and that they cupcakes are too hot. This melts the frosting and makes it slop over your pretty cupcakes. This means that you can't put any decoration or garnish on because it is just going to fall off.

Well, there it is. Yes, there definitely is a lot of issues with cupcakes, but they can most likely be fixed with just a few tips and tricks that help you along the way.
